But no two keys are alike and every lock has a unique key. My journey as Division K Director taught me that key to be better at leadership balance.

Think about your favorite dish, the aroma, the texture and the taste. List down all the ingredients and the recipe of the dish. If I ask you, “What makes this dish great?”. What will your answer be? If you are still wondering, then, are confused between 2 ingredients? Or are you confused between the different techniques that are used in cooking the dish? May be you don’t know where to start from. What makes my favorite dish great is the balance of the ingredients and the techniques used. Well, leadership is no different.

There is abundant knowledge around you, in toastmasters and over the internet about the various ingredients and techniques that can be used to become a great leader. The time before taking up the responsibilities of Division Director, I used to read, listen and watch the rich content about leadership. I was always excited to try out what I had learnt. You know what? It was always great to try something new. It even made me better. Then, there came a time, when all the knowledge became overwhelming and I decided to take a step back from trying new things. I wasn’t discouraged to try new things. I was just seeking calm in the chaos of new.

Stepping into the shoes of Division Director, gave me more chaos than calm. I had a fantastic team of Area Directors to work with. Each of them unique in their own way. I chartered the best plan for Division K to end the year with flying colors. Or, I thought I did. The year was a struggle making a recipe with the right ingredients and techniques. At the end, I only achieved 10% of what I had planned, but I found the balance that made Division K successful.

Likewise, my leadership grew into finding the right balance of techniques and ingredients I had learnt. No one ingredient or technique will make you great. It’s their balance that will make you great. It is very important to spend time in learning new techniques. It is equally important to spend time finding the right balance of techniques you have learnt.

Balance isn’t something you achieve “someday”.
